Lucca Mill achieves ISO 50001 Energy Management certification

DS Smith Paper is pleased to confirm that on December 19 2017 its paper mill in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, received the ISO 50001 Energy Management certification for the first time.

Energy management is a key concern for paper mills, as the papermaking process can require large quantities of energy to power paper machines. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), the world’s leading quality management regulators, awards the Energy Management certification to organisations that develop efficient energy usage policies, use data to make decisions about energy use, and continually improve energy management – among other criteria.

The ISO 500001 certification is the first certification to be fully integrated between Lucca Mill and its on-site power plant. DS Smith Paper worked with an external consultant to implement a series of internal audits, before a final audit by an external certifier confirmed that the mill and power plant had reached the ISO 50001 standard.

Lido Ferri, Sustainability Manager at DS Smith Lucca Paper Mill, said:

It is very important for us to have this certification, because the systems we have developed for it will help us to manage the mill’s consumption of heat and power, making us more sustainable. Following the success of this integrated certification and the collaborations between teams in the mill and the on-site power station, we are planning to integrate other certifications, so that we can work closely together and fulfil our company’s goal to lead the way in sustainability.
